When seeking news we can use, we want to be able to find unbiased news stories and outlets… or do we? One of the keys to finding information we can count on is to recognize bias in others, distinguishing it from opinion journalism and just plain carelessness. Just as important is being aware of – and checking – our own biases. Join Janis Schachter for a discussion of news literacy strategies that can help us detect fairness and balance in news reports while recognizing how our own agendas can influence what we see and how we see it.

Janis Schachter is a former journalist-turned social studies teacher. She started a news literacy program at Northport High School through the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University. She was the New York State Council for Social Studies distinguished educator in 2020, and in 2021 was named a silver laureate by the international organization Global Youth and News Media for her work in news literacy.
