Program Description

Event Details

Join Professor Ron Brown as he explores our fascination with pirates. Most people don't know that New York has its own pirate history and myth. During the 17th Century, Captain Kidd for example robbed Spanish galleons filled with silver and gold and brought his spoils back to the city. He lived in luxury, married into the city's high society, and contributed to the construction of Trinity Church. He was caught by the British and hung in 1701. Other New York pirates enriched the city and according to legend buried millions in gold, silver, and gems in isolated places on Long Island where they reportedly remain until today. You don't have to go to the Caribbean or the town of Penzance in England to find pirates, they were right here in the Big Apple.  (Sponsored by the Library's Nautical Advisory Council)
