Event Details
Join Dr. Ron Brown as he begins a new series on some of his great travel adventures. He begins with the last weekend he spent in Kyiv, Ukraine in early November 1992. The Soviet Union had just been dissolved, the Cold War was finally over, Ukraine had just declared independence and the city had just changed names from Kiev to Kyiv. Newly independent Ukraine set out on its rocky course towards an uncertain future. Revolutions followed coups, the economy sputtered and then sank, corruption reigned supreme, and the oligarchs grew rich. Russia and the USA have vied for control of the country ever since. The current conflict in Ukraine was already brewing when he spent a weekend in the lovely and historic city of Kiev/Kyiv. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
