Sandwiched In with Dennis Raverty - World War One: Propaganda and Field Artists

Join award-winning teacher and art historian for his latest installment in the history of illustration.  In recognition of the Veteran's Day holiday, Professor Raverty will explore the "War to End All Wars," and the propaganda posters that were created during the first World War.  Most people in the United States did not want to become involved with the unpopular overseas "European" war, so recruitment was especially challenging, and the illustrators hired by the government used various visual tactics to appeal to the emotions, often using nationalistic or racist propaganda. The army also commissioned illustrators as field artists to document the conflict, hoping to use these images for further recruitment. However, the work they produced was so depressing, that it was never actually used for these purposes.

In honor of the Veteran's Day holiday the local VFW Post 1819 will perform a special flag ceremony at the start of the program.
