Program Description

Event Details

Join Professor Ron Brown for a new series about Famous Women of New York.  Descended from a long line of New York City aristocrats, the Oyster Bay Roosevelts, Eleanor fell in love with Franklin D. Roosevelt of the Hyde Park branch of the family. More than dislike separated the two branches of the clan. The Oyster Bay branch was fervently Republican while the Hyde Park branch was equally fervently Democrat. Defying family history, FDR and Eleanor formed a team that would determine American and world history. Eleanor was the first First Lady to hold press conferences and freely announced her agreement and disagreement with her husband. She championed the advancement of women, African-Americans and the poor. Until today she remains a pillar of the rise of women in American society.
