Program Description

Event Details

Join Professor James Coll for an informative lecture, where he will explore the ways in which the Constitution is applied to school classrooms.  Few issues in America generate as much debate as the controversy surrounding the rights of students and teachers in the classroom. The difficulty in preserving individual liberty while providing a safe and productive learning environment has produced decades of legal action in an attempt to find the balance between these sometimes-opposing objectives. In this lecture, controversies & Supreme Court decisions are analyzed as a way to comprehend the application of the Constitution in our schools.  James Coll is an adjunct professor of American and Constitutional history at Nassau Community College.  He has written numerous articles for Politico, The Hill, City Journal and Newsday among other periodicals.  (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)

This program is offered as part of the Library's recognition of Banned Books Week.
