Program Description

Event Details

Join author Claire Bellerjeau as she recounts the incredible true story of Elizabeth, or Liss, an enslaved Black woman from Oyster Bay, New York, who struggled for freedom during the Revolutionary War. Enslaved by the Townsend family, whose son Robert was George Washington's lead spy, Liss's struggle comes to life in Bellerjeau's books, Remember Liss (2024) and Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution (2021), offering a fresh voice and perspective on America's founding from the lens of an enslaved Black woman seeking personal liberty in a country fighting for its own.
