Event Details

Join award-winning teacher and art historian as he continues his exploration of the History of Illustration with a look at the "Ashcan" school of urban realists in the early 20th century. Originally employed as newspaper illustrators in Philadelphia, these artists, under the leadership of charismatic painter Robert Henri, moved to New York City to record the urban spectacle of contemporary life among the working classes. Their gritty realism captured the diversity, the confusion and the romance of life in the modern metropolis and earned them the label "ashcan" artists, because their unidealized subject matter was considered rubbish by the elite art establishment.
