Event Details
As part of the Library's celebration of Black History Month, join award-winning teacher and art historian Dennis Raverty as he explores the work of contemporary illustrator Kadir Nelson. In this illustrated talk Dr. Raverty will show how Kadir Nelson often uses references to art history, colonialism and social justice in his representations of African American history and cultural identity. Using traditional old-master painting techniques, his work has reached a large, national audience and although sophisticated, remains popular and accessible. Since 2020, he has emerged as a major spokesman for the Black Lives Matter movement.
