Event Details
Join award-winning teacher and art historian Dennis Raverty as he examines some of the early history of illustration. During the U. S. Civil War, large-circulation illustrated pictorial "weekly" papers, such as Leslie's and Harper's, employed illustrators embedded among the troops to cover the action at the front. Back at the home office, engravers worked in teams to turn the artist's sketch into a reproducible print within a matter of days. Dr. Raverty is an Associate Professor at New Jersey City University where he teaches 19th and 20th-century art history, the art of West Africa, the diaspora and African American art, as well as the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Europe.
