Virtual Sandwiched In with Andrew Rimby - To Bryant, the 'Poet of Nature’: Walt Whitman and William Cullen Bryant’s Transcendental Relationship

In 1847, Walt Whitman coined William Cullen Bryant “one of the best poets in the world” while writing for the Brooklyn Eagle. And, a few years before expressing his praise for Bryant’s poetic talent, Whitman had written a poem in dedication to Bryant’s Romantic and Naturalist themes. Because Bryant and Whitman are poets from two different generations, Whitman looked up to Bryant as a poetic role model. However, their approach to several poetic genres including Romanticism, Naturalism, and Transcendentalism differed as did their approach to abolitionism. How do we, in 2021, approach these two influential Long Island poets? And why may it be helpful to look at their poetry through an ecopoetic lens? Andrew Rimby, who is a PhD candidate at Stony Brook University and an expert on Walt Whitman's life, will deliver this presentation which will include many photos of historical locations in our neighboring town of Roslyn.
