Join Tony Traguardo for a close look at the Beatles’ compilation albums ‘1962-1966’ and ‘1967-1970’. Fans and the Beatles themselves are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the compilations that have come to be known as the ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ albums. Word is that newly-released editions may be on their way from Apple Records. Could these releases be connected to the completion of a new, and last, Beatles song called ‘Now and Then’?
The ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ albums were released on April 2, 1973, and they quickly became the foundation of the Beatles legend for the next few decades. Arguably the most influential greatest-hits albums in history, the two double LP collections became the “gateway drug” into the Beatles songbook for generations of fans. Not simply samplers or greatest hits albums, the collections, which featured iconic artwork, celebrate the mystique of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ albums were also the first attempt to create a Beatles ‘canon’.
Their origins lie In the release of a pirate compilation called ‘Alpha Omega’ that was being sold nationally without the endorsement of the Beatles. The legacy of the band was still being determined at the time, and there was no consistent agreement on what they would be best remembered for. So, in response to that illegal release, Allen Klein, the manager of John, George & Ringo, compiled a song list for the ‘Red’ and the ‘Blue’ in 1973 that consisted solely of original compositions; no covers. But did this accurately represent the Beatles?
