Oscar nominees Frank Davis and Tess Slesinger scripted this adaptation of Betty Smith's novel about a bright young girl named Francie (Peggy Ann Garner) trying to rise above the hardships of her tenement life in turn‑of‑the‑century Brooklyn. Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, James Dunn, Lloyd Nolan and James Gleason co-star. This was director Elia Kazan's first film.
