Rex Fowler (of Aztec Two-Step) is the library’s guest for a unique ‘Inside the Musician’s Mind’ program that also serves as a ‘book release party’ for Rex’s recently released memoir, See It Was Like This… The book was edited by the event’s host, the library’s own Tony Traguardo.
At a chance meeting on an open stage, at a Boston coffee house in 1971, Rex Fowler watched Neal Shulman perform. They would soon begin a 45+ year partnership in a duo they would christen Aztec Two-Step, after a line from a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Within a year after meeting, they had a contract with Elektra Records to make their first album, and two albums with RCA Records would follow.
The band received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album in 1986, and have performed on TV and radio programs such as Late Night with David Letterman, The King Biscuit Flower Hour, and World Cafe Live. A documentary about the band, No-Hit Wonder, aired on PBS in 1999. Since Shulman's retirement in 2017, the band has toured as Aztec Two-Step 2.0, a term coined by former bandmate Shulman to describe the group's new sound.
The afternoon’s conversation and anecdotes will focus on Rex’s adventures growing up in Maine and, of course, his experiences in the music industry throughout the course of his lengthy career. And Rex may be coaxed into playing a song or two!
'Inside the Musician's Mind' is made possible by the Friends of the Port Washington Public Library.
