Port Washington Public Library Media Services’ film maven Jonathan Guildroy will talk with composer Craig Safan via Zoom during this live hybrid event which will also include a viewing of the 1925 version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney.

Craig Safan was a recipient of the Senior Music Award from Brandeis University, where he studied with Harold Shapero in the school’s electronic music studio, and with Alvin Lucier in electronic music and conceptual sound pictures. A Watson Foundation Fellowship allowed him to study electronic music in London with Peter Zinovieff and others. He has conducted his music at California’s Redondo Performing Arts Center with the Golden State Pops Orchestra. He has also composed original scores for Charlie Chaplin’s silent film ‘The Kid’ and for Lon Chaney’s 1925 film ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, which have been presented at live concerts in Texas and California. Mr. Safan will be appearing with us live via the Zoom platform.

Mr. Safan has written the music for over thirty feature films including ‘Mr. Wrong’, ‘Major Payne’, ‘Nightmare on Elm Street IV’ and ‘Remo Williams’. For the small screen, he is best known for his work as the composer for the series ‘Cheers’ for which he was awarded eight ASCAP Top TV awards, as well as for his music for ‘Life Goes On’, which earned Safan an EMMY nomination. He’s also written music for ‘Amazing Stories’, ‘The New Twilight Zone’, and ‘Tales from the Crypt’ as well as the EMMY-winning mini-series ‘Son of the Morning Star’ and ‘Mission of the Shark’. Safan also scored the top-selling National Geographic documentary ‘Secrets of the Titanic’ and the Oscar-nominated documentary ‘The California Reich’.
