Would-be stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck (Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix) lives with his ailing mother Penny (Frances Conroy) in a shabby apartment in Gotham City. Arthur dreams of performing on Murray Franklin’s (Robert De Niro) talk show and going out on a date with his neighbor, Sophie (Zazie Beetz), but his chances of success on either count are slim -- until he commits a shocking act of violence.
