Program Description

Event Details

From a humble childhood to a successful career as a popular artist’s model, French artist Suzanne Valadon (1865–1938) defied the odds to become a successful, self-taught painter. Valadon was the first self-taught woman to exhibit at the French Salon breaking new ground with her unapologetic portraits and nudes. Valadon’s work addresses themes that remain provocative today: female desire, the conflicts of marriage and motherhood, and a woman’s experience of her own physicality. Her work will be on display at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia through January 9, 2022. Join us as Professor Thomas Germano presents a visual lecture about this important painter’s life and work.
