Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) lived and worked in Delft, Holland. His tranquil domestic, introverted, interior scenes, unprecedented use of bright, colorful light and realistic illusionism is what Vermeer is best known for. Vermeer is known to have created only about 35 paintings and his paintings are generally considered the most prized treasures of museum collections and rarely leave their home institutes. 28 of Vermeer's 35 paintings were exhibited at the Rijks earlier this year including masterpieces such as The Girl with a Pearl Earring (Mauritshuis, The Hague), The Geographer (Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main), Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid (The National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin) and Woman Holding a Balance (The National Gallery of Art, Washington DC).
Works never before shown to the public in the Netherlands included the newly restored Girl Reading a Letter at the Open Window from the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture about Vermeer, recent scholarship, and the unprecedented Dutch exhibition of 2023.
Please note this program will be in-person only.
