It is housed in the Louvre Palace, a building originally built as a castle in the late 12th century under Phillip ll. The building was enlarged several times throughout the years. . The museum first opened to the public in 1793. At the present the Louvre contains more than 460,000 objects, and displays 35,000 works of art in eight curatorial departments. Part two of our three part series will be dedicated to the study of the art produced from the 13th to the 16th centuries.
