Diego Velázquez 1599 – 1660

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, the most admire and perhaps the greatest European painter, who ever lived, had a gift for conveying a sense of truth. He had a special talent for painting portraits, which capture the appearance of reality through the seemingly effortless handling of the paint. Born in Seville in 1599, Velázquez became official artist to King Philip IV at a time when Spain dominated the world. Velázquez was a contemporary of van Dyck, Bernini and Zurbarán. Art Historian and Educator Ines Powell will share insights and works from Velazquez in this month's Virtual Visits.
