Join Professor Valerie Franco for an examination into the works of American artists Henry Oshawa Tanner, Kara Walker & Kehinde Wiley - artists of color whose galvanizing images push us to explore society, culture, religion and race, each in their own unique, glorious style. We will delve into the evocative images of Tangier, Paris, Cairo and Atlantic City by Pittsburgh native and Realist painter Tanner at the turn of the 20th century and contemporary painter Kehinde Wiley's interrogation into race, masculinity and power as they relate to the writing of history.
We will also look at Kara Walker's iconic silhouette series of figures that voice her inquiry into gender and sexuality.
