Abstract Art by Women Artists, (1945-1970.)
Societal shifts in the post WWII era made it possible for more women to work professionally as artists, yet their work was often dismissed in the male dominated art world. Reflecting an international language that transcended national and regional narratives, abstraction dominated artistic practice during these years.
Inspired by the MoMA's 'Making Spaces' exhibit and drawn entirely from MoMA's permanent collection, works presented will range from the boldly gestural canvases of Elaine deKooning, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, and Joan Mitchell; geometries by Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, and Gego; reductive abstractions of Agnes Martin, Anne Truitt, and Jo Baer; fiber weavings of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hicks, and Lenore Tawney; and the process-oriented sculptures of Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, and Eva Hesse.
Professor Thomas Germano will present this visual lecture.
