Gays and Lesbians have been among us since Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden. For most of history they were individuals invisible to society. From time to time one or more gained notoriety for some reason or the other, but rarely. Gays and Lesbians and other sexual minorities have lived in New York City since colonial times but were largely invisible and the victims of police, religious, and political oppression. All that changed on June 28, 1969, when the police began a routine raid on the Stonewall Tavern in Greenwich Village. The patrons fought back and Christopher Street gradually became a gay city within a city.
