Professor Ron Brown continues his travel series with a closer look at the city of St. Petersburg. Czar Peter the Great dredged a monumental new capital out of swampland to proclaim the emergence of Russia as a major European world capital. Like many ambitious rulers, he named his new capital after himself. The architecture was Italian inspired, the engineering was Dutch, the army was German commanded, and his court was French speaking. St. Petersburg was more than just a new city, it represented the emergence of Asiatic Russia as a major European and World power. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
