Event Details

From the 9th to the 13th centuries the Khmer Emperor ruled his vast empire that included Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and large parts of Vietnam from his capital city of Angkor Wat. Ships laden with goods sailed to Japan and China, India, east Africa, and the Middle East. Greek, Arab, Jewish, Indian, and Chinese merchants brought the wealth of the world to glorify the city. Monumental stone temples, palaces, public buildings, and suburbs spread for miles around, making Angkor Wat one of the largest cities in the medieval world. In the year 1431 the empire was invaded by a coalition of kings of Thailand, Angkor Wat was looted and burned. For the next 6 centuries, only the ghosts of ancient emperors, empresses, soldiers, priests and monks, teachers, artists, and citizens dwelled in the palaces, temples, mansions, and courtyards. Join Dr. Ronald Brown as he joins these ghosts of an empire past. Dr. Brown explored this exciting city during January 2003. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
