More than 59,000 American nurses served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, 30,000 of them at front-line hospitals in overseas war zones where they endured many of the same horrific conditions as the troops they followed. This presentation by historian Patricia DelGiorno, highlights nurses who served in three major combat zones; the Philippines where 70 nurses captured by the Japanese were held as prisoners of war until 1945, Anzio Beach, Italy, which was known as a “Half Acre of Hell," and the Battle of the Bulge. This multimedia presentation will also include film clips of interviews with a number of these heroic women recounting their experiences in the field, as POW’s, and in their post-war home coming.
