The father of the modern Jewish state, Theodore Herzl, declared that it was time for Jews to get rid of the bearded rabbis, dark synagogues, and crowded ghettos that had plagued Jews since the destruction of the Jewish kingdom in the year 70 AD. In his book Der Judenstaat of 1896 he called on Jews to migrate to Palestine and build a city that looked to a glorious future rather than a distant past. Tel Aviv – The Hill of Springtime, was founded shortly thereafter and was soon filled with modern Jews drinking beer in cafes, going to the opera, reading and writing modern literature in Hebrew, building universities and factories, and joining the modern world. Tel Aviv was the city of the Jewish future. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
