Istanbul was the first city that claimed to inherit the greatness and glory of the first Rome in Italy. Until today Istanbul proudly insists that it is the Second Rome but great cities like Moscow, London, Paris, Washington D.C. and New York also claim to be the heirs of ancient Rome. President George Washington proclaimed that New York City was the American Empire City and Washington D.C. was built to rival the glory of the first Rome. But Istanbul was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Turkish Empires and ruled the known world for over a thousand years. Linking Europe and Asia, Istanbul remains one of the world’s great Empire Cities. Join Professor Ron Brown for his latest installment of exploring great cities of the world.
