For centuries the Dutch ruled a world empire that extended from Indonesia to Brazil and New York to South Africa and Amsterdam was both the capital of this empire and the richest city in the world. The city also contributed Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, the Dutch Renaissance, architecture, and romantic canals to world culture. During the 1960s and 1970s Amsterdam was the world capital of hippies, prostitution, and pornography, drugs, and all night fun and Americans flocked to the city in droves. Today's speaker Dr. Ron Brown, was one of these many young Americans who called this fascinating city home during these wonderful years. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
