The Library is very proud to welcome award-winning author and activist, Talia Carner, (who used to live right here in Port Washington), to discuss her latest book, The Third Daughter and the historical real-life struggles that were the basis for her novel. Fleeing poverty, strife and pogroms of Eastern Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s, over 150,000 Jewish girls who dreamed of “America” fell to the false promises of marriages and jobs by members of Zwi Migdal. Instead, this legal traffickers’ union that operated with impunity throughout South America for 70 years, forced them into prostitution. During her presentation, Talia Carner will reveal how the cries of these women, also shunned by the Jewish community, forced her to expose the most shameful chapter in Jewish history. She will also educate the audience about actions that can be taken today to abolish the horror of modern human enslavement in your own backyard. Following her talk, there will be a Q and A session with Ms. Carner, as well as information about book sales. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library)
