Sandwiched In with Ron Brown - Central Park in the Spring

Join Dr. Ronald Brown as he explores the history of New York's Central Park. In the Spring of 1859 the nation was preparing for the Civil War. But New Yorkers were preparing to celebrate the first Spring in their new Central Park. The population of the city of New York was approaching a million and its Fifth Avenue elite sought to eclipse London and Paris as the global centers of power, glory, culture, and civilization. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were chosen to design a park in the heart of Manhattan that would rival any of those in Europe. The result was the largest park completely inside a city limits that would establish New York as a major world city. A stone wall surrounded the park and it was closed on Sundays to keep out the unwashed masses. Elegant carriages were available to the urban elite who did not have their own and soon the new park where robber barons displayed their wealth, mothers showed their well-bred daughters to available bachelors, and fathers greeted other elite gentlemen.
