Matisse and American Art. Henri Matisse has been a profound influence on American modern art from its beginnings and throughout the 20th century. Americans were among the first students when Matisse opened an art school in Paris in 1908. Matisse's color, composition, and subject matter inspired generations of later American artists including Arthur Dove, Stuart Davis, Ellsworth Kelly, Helen Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein. Join Vivian Gordon for this illustrated discussion.
