Five years after the launch of Sputnik, the first man-made satellite was launched into orbit, President Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the moon” speech persuaded the American public that outer space has emerged as the new frontier. The Apollo program presented many different challenges to the United States. Heading into outer space was a technical battle fought by American scientists, engineers, and astronauts that culminated with America reaching the moon and returning safely back to Earth.
