Join Professor Thomas Germano for a visual presentation exploring the art of Norman Rockwell (1894-1978).  Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator who depicted American culture and values using humor and home-spun folksy tales. Rockwell’s cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post and illustrations reproduced on the Boy Scout calendar for five decades made him a household name. He was a visual storyteller who condensed narratives into a single image, using caricature and everyday subjects from small-town Americana. The film director Steven Spielberg, also a major collector of Rockwell’s art, once said, “Rockwell painted the American Dream better than anyone.”  Rockwell was not one to shy-away from controversial themes of his times., from FDR’s “Four Freedoms,” to subjects addressing racism, poverty, segregation, and tolerance.
