Beginning in the 16th century Western consumers coveted Asian lacquer objects for their rich ornament, brilliant gloss, and durability. In 18th century Boston, American craftsmen simulated Asian lacquer with new techniques that became known as Japanning. Join museum educator, Alice W. Iglehart to explore exquisite American Japanned furniture and how they were made.
