FOL University, the Friends of the Library’s scholarly lecture series, returns on Sunday, October 25th at 1:30 p.m. with Douglas Rushkoff, Ph.D., Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY/Queens.
Dr. Rushkoff will discuss his “Team Human Manifesto,” which argues that there is an anti-human agenda embedded in our markets and technologies, turning them from means of human connection into ones of isolation and repression. Rushkoff believes we must reconnect with our essentially social nature, assert a place for humans in the emerging landscape, and forge solidarity with others who understand that being human is a team sport. He notes of the current pandemic that “COVID doesn't just attack individuals, it attacks the fabric of community. This is a moment to rediscover the true nature of civics -- the responsibility each of us has for one another. How can we make choices that keep us personally safe yet also restore our collective resilience? That is the objective of Team Human.”

Named one of the “world’s ten most influential intellectuals” by MIT, Douglas Rushkoff is an author and documentarian who studies human autonomy in a digital age. He coined such concepts as “viral media,” “screenagers,” and “social currency.” He is a research fellow of the Institute for the Future and founder of the Laboratory for Digital Humanism at CUNY/Queens.
