Widowed backwoodsman Big Davey (William Holden) buys and marries an indentured servant named Rachel (Loretta Young) to care for and educate his son, Davey Jr. (Gary Gray), but the arrival of handsome stranger Jim (Robert Mitchum) threatens the relationship.
