” (1995-95 min.). Between 1907 and 1924, 19,000 Japanese women immigrated to Hawaii to marry Japanese sugar cane workers. This drama follows the tribulations of 16-year-old Riyo (Youki Kudoh), who arrives in her new home to discover that her prospective husband Mastuji (Akira Takayama) is twice her age, and determines to earn enough money to pay her fare back to Japan. Director Kayo Hatta scripted with her sister, Mari Hatta. Presented as part of the library’s Asian Festival. In English and Japanese with English subtitles.
