The post-graffiti transition from street art to artists canvas, gallery walls and museums in 1980s New York City saw an insurgent movement within contemporary American Art. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) went from hoodlum to art world darling and art megastar of this transformational art movement. Creative energies crossed multi art forms from music to visual art, fashion, and video. Basquiat’s painting, sculpture, drawing and multi-media, is seen in the context of the origins of hip hop alongside works by his contemporaries and collaborators including Fab 5 Freddy, Futura, Keith Haring and Rammellzee.
These artists were at the forefront of the now globally popular hip-hop culture, employing neo-expressionism, freestyle sampling, and wild-style lettering, Basquiat and his peers created a New York urban style that became an international art and music scene. Professor Thomas Germano will present a virtual visual and audio lecture inspired by the exhibition Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip Hop Generation on display at the Boston MFA from October 18, 2020 through May 16, 2021.
