Program Description

Event Details

In the mid 16th century, the Venetian Renaissance artist Titian (1490?-1576) created a series of six monumental paintings for King Philip II of Spain. The poesias (painted poetries) present monumental narratives from classical antiquity. Their inclusion in the Spanish Royal collection influenced Rubens, Velazquez, Goya and, 21st century contemporary artists have been commissioned to respond to the important works. These epic works will be shown in Madrid, London and their only US venue, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston through January 2, 2022. With the Gardner’s recently restored ‘Rape of Europa’ among the works on view, questions of gender, power and sexual violence are engaged as relevant topics today as they were in the Renaissance and in Antiquity. This visual ZOOM lecture will be presented by Thomas Germano.
