Art Talk with Professor Thomas Germano - Teotihuacan

As part of the Library's celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage during the month of September, Professor Thomas Germano will explore Teotihuacan, which is a vast Mexican archaeological complex 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. It has long been referred to as "The Place Where The Gods were created." Built between the 1st and 7th century AD, Teotihuacan is reknown for it's two massive pyramidal structures dedicated to the Sun and the Moon and laid out with geometric and symbolic planning with cosmic meaning. Running through the center of the site is what the later Aztecs (14th-16th century) mistakenly called "The Avenue of the Dead." Before Teotihuacan's mysterious fall in the 7th century, the city extended its cultural and artistic influence throughout the region attracting Zapotec, and Maya cultures to visit and live in the city. We see evidence of trade, conquest, science, politics, and cross cultural influences from Teotihuacan spread across Mesoamerica, even Guatemala's Pacific Coast. With recent discoveries and art from Teotihuacan exhibited in Mexico and California (2017-18), Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture concentrating on the painting, sculpture, architecture and utilitarian objects of art from this important cultural and political center.
