Event Details

Philip Guston (1913–1980) was one of America's great modern painters. Guston was a WPA muralist, a leading figurative artist of the 1930’s and 40’s, a University professor, an artist in residence, a Prix de Rome recipient, a recognized abstract expressionist and in his late career returned to a new, intentionally clumsy representational style.
Guston uniquely bridged the personal and the political, the abstract and the figurative, the humorous and the tragic, hilarity and horror, in canvases applying painterly surfaces and graphic vibrancy. An international retrospective of the artist’s work, Philip Guston Now, has been put on hold due to the subjects represented and the potential for misinterpretation. Working at the forefront of 20th century history and very much aware of his own times, Philip Guston created prescient works that continue to haunt our uneasiness and unresolved American history.
Thomas Germano will present a remote visual lecture on the art, life and times of Philip Guston.
