Program Description

Event Details

With the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death in 2023, France and Spain will partner to organize an international exhibition dedicated to the artist’s legacy that will see 40 shows staged across Europe and the U.S. throughout the year. Picasso was born in Spain and resided in France for most of his mature life, which inspired the partnership of two neighboring European nations to establish a commission dubbed “The Picasso 1973-2023 Celebration.”

The French culture ministry described the transnational exhibitions set up to promote Picasso as “an artist who embodies the founding principles of Europe, made up of democratic states, defenders of human rights and freedom of expression.” Fittingly, Picasso’s anti-fascist masterpiece “Guernica” of 1937 served as the back drop for the announcement. Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture related to the art exhibitions and events surrounding “The Picasso 1973-2023 Celebration.”

PLEASE NOTE: This is a 'hybrid' event that can be attended either "In-Person" or "Online" on the Zoom platform. You can choose which option you wish to register for in the "Do you want to attend in-person or online?" dropdown menu below.
