In recognition of St. Patrick's Day, Professor Thomas Germano will explore the art treasures of Dublin, Ireland. Topics to be discussed include The National Gallery of Ireland which houses the collection of European fine art including extraordinary works by Caravaggio, Vermeer and Velazquez and Irish masters: Jack Yeats, Margaret Clarke and James Barry. Professor Germano will also examine The Book of Kells c. 800AD, one of the finest examples of Celtic Art and housed at Trinity College, Dublin, as well as The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Ireland's leading national institution for the collection and presentation of modern and contemporary art, begun in 1990. In 1988 approximately 1,200 Old Master prints were donated to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham (now IMMA) by Clare Madden with works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Hogarth, and Goya, who are among the greatest printmakers in the history of art. Another topic will be The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, who obtained and transported the entire contents of Dublin-born Francis Bacon's London art studio. And lastly, Dublin art monuments and artistic sites will also be examined.
