In 1534, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) left Florence for Rome, never to see his native city again. Join Professor Thomas Germano for this visual lecture which looks at the last 30 years of Michelangelo's remarkable life, from his return to Rome – having been summoned by Pope Clement VII to paint a fresco of the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel – brought him many new and important commissions.
Having secured his reputation early in his career with early masterworks, rather than resting on his laurels, Michelangelo produced some of the most innovative and masterful works in his late career. The Last Judgment, The Dome of San Pietro, frescoes for the papal apartments and a late Pieta shows his renewed energy and desire to challenge himself in the final decades of his life as he explored salvation and confronted his mortality.
This program is presented as part of the Library's celebration of Italian Cultural Heritage during the month of October.
